What an SEC API returns

Companies listed in the United States file reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission through EDGAR. An SEC API turns that archive into data an application can query: lists of recent filings for a company, feeds of new 8-K events, insider transactions from Form 4, institutional holdings from 13F reports, and reported financial facts tagged in XBRL. The SEC publishes EDGAR and its data APIs without charge. A paid service adds ticker resolution, parsing, normalization, hosting and a payment flow that an agent can use without an account.

The unit of evidence is the filing. Every derived value, from a revenue figure to an insider buy, comes from a document with a form type, a filer, a filing date and an accession number. A useful API keeps those identifiers attached, so a number can be traced back to the document that reported it and checked against the original text.

Filing dates and event dates differ. A 10-K is filed weeks after the fiscal year ends. A Form 4 is due by the end of the second business day after the transaction it reports. A 13F report describes positions at the end of a quarter and is filed up to 45 days later. Read each record with the right date, or a model will treat old information as new.

Interpretation is a separate layer. A change summary, a sentiment label on an 8-K or a cluster-buying signal is the provider's reading of the filings. It can save time, and it should stay distinguishable from the filed facts beneath it.

Compare the returned data, sources and limits

The comparison separates four outputs that can qualify a service: filing indexes, feeds and search; insider transactions from Forms 4 and 144; institutional and activist holdings from 13F, 13D and 13G filings; and reported financial facts from XBRL. Analysis derived from filings, such as change summaries, catalyst calendars, pipeline scores or fails-to-deliver statistics, is listed as an adjacent output. It can accompany a qualifying service and never sets the row price.

A bundle can span several outputs. A route that returns insider trades, holdings and recent 8-K events in one call appears under each of those types, priced as one request. Compare it with the separate calls it replaces rather than with a single-form route.

SEC EDGAR or data.sec.gov is named in the matched endpoint descriptions of Agent402.tools, x402stock, Market Intelligence API, ApiToll SEC EDGAR Data, Degenscan Intel, longwatch, Datakoot, Zinin M2M Hub and AgentSAPI - Base Onchain Data API (x402). Naming the source does not establish freshness: a live read of EDGAR, a nightly parse and a feed rebuilt on a schedule return different lags. Check the provider's stated update cycle against the timing your workflow needs.

Routes scoped to spot crypto ETF issuers are described by Crypto ETF Sentinel. A scoped product can be deep within its issuer set and silent outside it; an empty result there says nothing about other companies.

$/CALL is the price of the endpoint named under it: the cheapest filing indexes, feeds and full-text search, insider transactions from forms 4 and 144, institutional and activist holdings from 13f, 13d and 13g filings and reported financial facts from xbrl endpoint of the service or, for a service without one, its cheapest SEC data endpoint. Never the cheapest tool of a gateway. Other kinds of data have their own price in the tables below. SEC DATA ENDPOINTS counts the SEC data endpoints out of all the endpoints the service lists. BUYERS 30D counts distinct wallets that paid the whole service on-chain in 30 days, not only its SEC data endpoints. "Generalist" marks a gateway that sells more than three unrelated kinds of tools: it is never called the cheapest.

How to choose an SEC data endpoint

Name the form and the question

A question about material events reads 8-K filings; a question about insider buying reads Form 4; a question about fund positions reads 13F. Start from the form, then pick a route that returns it with the fields you need: item codes for 8-K, transaction codes for Form 4, the reporting period for 13F.

Decide between a feed and a lookup

A feed of new filings answers what was filed since the last poll. A company lookup answers what one issuer has filed. A full-text search answers which documents mention a phrase. The three have different units and different freshness, and an alerting job and a research job usually need different ones.

Keep identifiers attached

Store the CIK, the form type, the filing date, the period of report and the accession number with every record. Tickers change and can be reused; the CIK and the accession number do not. They also let you open the original document when a parsed field looks wrong.

Treat normalized financials with care

Normalized concepts make companies comparable, and they can merge items that a company reports separately. When a figure drives a decision, compare it with the as-filed XBRL fact and the statement it came from, and keep the fiscal period alongside the calendar date.

Measure the lag after filing

For alerting, the delay between a filing appearing on EDGAR and the record appearing in the API matters more than the per-call price. File a test window of known filings and compare their EDGAR acceptance times with the times the route returned them.

Test the operating limits

The monitored median uptime is 100% and the median selected quote is $0.01. Monitoring latency describes our checks, not the lag after filing. Test an amended filing, a company that changed its ticker, a foreign private issuer filing 6-K or 20-F and a filing with no XBRL before committing to a provider.

Choose by the output your workflow needs

Start with the record your next step consumes. The candidates below use the same classification as the comparison table, and each job quote is the lowest priced endpoint of the requested types, with its path kept.

Find and monitor filings

A filing record should carry the form type, the filing date and a link to the document. Decide whether you need a feed of new filings, the history of one company or a phrase search across documents; they are different requests.

Track insider transactions

A Form 4 reports a completed transaction; a Form 144 notice reports a proposed sale. Keep the transaction code, the date and whether a trading plan applied before reading a buy or a sale as a signal.

Follow institutional and activist stakes

Quarterly 13F reports arrive weeks after the quarter they describe, while 13D and 13G filings report stakes above a threshold. Keep the period of each position and avoid reading an aggregate as a current trade.

Pull reported financial facts

XBRL facts are tagged by the filer. Normalization helps comparison and can also hide a definition change, so keep the original concept, the period and the filing that reported each number.

What the providers describe

These paragraphs attribute output contracts, sources and limits to each provider. Reference prices follow the matching endpoint type, never an amount quoted in a marketing description.

ApiToll SEC EDGAR Data

ApiToll's filing routes start at $0.003. /v1/edgar/filings returns the latest 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K filings of a US-listed company by ticker or CIK, resolving the ticker through the SEC's official index and returning the parsed filing. Form 4 insider trades start at $0.003, and a bundle of insider trades, 13F holdings and recent 8-K events is priced at $0.006. The provider says it reads data.sec.gov live and offers a free coverage route that reports which forms exist before a paid call.

Datakoot

Datakoot groups its SEC routes as filings intelligence. Recent filings with dates and document links and full-text search start at $0.01; Form 3, 4 and 5 insider filings are priced at $0.01; reported XBRL facts such as revenue, net income, assets and EPS, or the history of one us-gaap concept, at $0.01. The provider says calls are charged only on success. Its descriptions name the forms and concepts returned, which makes the mapping to your own schema easier to check.

4 SEC data endpoints of 48 · $0.01/call (GET /api/filing_search) · Base · uptime 30d 100% · 86 ms · 7 buyers in 30 days

Market Intelligence API

Market Intelligence API splits SEC data by form across separate routes. The newest 8-K filings start at $0.005, Form 4 trades and Form 144 notices at $0.01, 13D and 13G holders at $0.01 and fundamentals from SEC filings at $0.01. Its Form 4 routes add a derived signal, such as a cluster-buying label. Keep the underlying transactions with the label, since the signal is the provider's interpretation.

12 SEC data endpoints of 104 · $0.005/call (GET /api/v1/sec/filings) · ARB/Base/BSP/POL/SOL · uptime 30d 99.8% · 104 ms · 41 buyers in 30 days

Agent402.tools

Agent402.tools lists EDGAR full-text search across filings since 2001 and recent S-1 and 424B4 filings at $0.005, and Form 4 insider transactions at $0.005. Its XBRL route, at $0.005, returns the full reported history of one concept for a company, and the provider says each datapoint cites the accession number and filing that reported it. That citation is what lets a number in your model be traced back to a 10-K or 10-Q.

4 SEC data endpoints of 10 · $0.005/call (GET /api/edgar-recent-ipos) · ARB/AVX/Base/POL/SOL · uptime 30d 99.8% · 197 ms · 276 buyers in 30 days

SwarmIO Cloud

SwarmIO lists one parsed feed of new SEC filings at $0.02: 8-K events with item codes in plain words, Form 4 trades with shares, price and role, insider cluster buys, 13D stakes and new S-1 or F-1 filings, with tickers attached. The provider says the feed is rebuilt every 30 minutes and offers a delayed free sample. A periodic rebuild sets the freshness you can expect; poll at that interval instead of faster.

LoneStarOracle InsiderFlow

LoneStarOracle InsiderFlow has one route, /trades, at $0.03. The service description says it returns Form 4 buys and sells by officers, directors and 10% owners for a ticker, with a configurable lookback. A single-purpose route is easy to reason about; check how it reports derivative transactions, gifts and trading-plan sales before aggregating them into a buy or sell total.

Crypto ETF Sentinel

Crypto ETF Sentinel is a scoped product: its routes cover SEC filings, comment letters and XBRL data of US spot crypto ETF issuers. Comment-letter histories and filing feeds start at $0.05, and fund data from XBRL facts starts at $0.05. Pipeline scores and approval-pattern signals are the provider's analysis of filing activity, listed here as an adjacent output. Outside that issuer set, another filing source is needed.

SEC fundamentals API

SEC fundamentals API lists /screen at $0.1: a screener that filters US public companies by financial metrics for a fiscal year and returns the matching companies with their values. The provider says its data is parsed nightly from EDGAR and normalized to a canonical concept set. Normalization makes companies comparable; it also means a metric may differ from the figure a company labels in its own filing, so keep both when precision matters.

1 SEC data endpoint of 1 · $0.1/call (GET /screen) · Base · uptime 30d 100% · 1186 ms · 0 buyers in 30 days

longwatch

longwatch lists GET /check at $0.001: a one-off snapshot that also reads pages, RSS feeds, crypto prices and x402 endpoints, with an EDGAR mode that takes a ticker or CIK. The provider says 8-K item codes are decoded and Form 4 trades parsed in that mode, so name the EDGAR type in the request. A separate POST /watches route buys a standing watch with a baseline and seven days of polling. That is a monitoring purchase rather than a lookup, so it stays outside the price comparison.

1 SEC data endpoint of 2 · $0.001/call (GET /check) · Base · uptime 30d 100% · 616 ms · 7 buyers in 30 days

Degenscan Intel

Degenscan lists /v1/filings/NVDA at $0.002 for SEC filings touching one US issuer: 8-K events by item, Form 4 trades, 13D or 13G stakes and S-1 offerings, each with an impact direction and a link. The impact direction is the provider's reading of the filing. Its pre-trade briefing route combines filings with headlines and other data and is listed as derived analysis.

Each service at the price of its main SEC data endpoint, the one named in the table above.

Monitoring jobs are billed by polling frequency, not by filings found. A watch list polled every few minutes generates many calls that return nothing new. Match the polling interval to the provider's stated update cycle, prefer a feed that filters by ticker over one lookup per company, and stop polling outside the hours a filing could change your decision.

Research jobs are billed by depth. A company history, a full-text search and a series of XBRL concepts can each take several calls per question. Cache filings, which do not change once filed, and refresh only the routes that report new documents. Read the payment challenge for the exact request before authorizing a payment, and record whether an empty result was charged.

Inspect a request and its payment evidence

The public listing documents ApiToll SEC EDGAR Data at GET /v1/edgar/filings, taking a ticker or CIK and returning the company's latest 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K filings. This endpoint has a reference quote of $0.003. The provider also describes a free coverage route that reports which forms exist for a company before a paid call.

The listed method and description establish the advertised contract. This explanation does not reproduce an HTTP 402 challenge or certify a paid response. Open the linked service's payment evidence and request the challenge for the exact call before authorizing a payment. Keep the resource, method, ticker or CIK, accepted payment and response together, then compare the returned filings with the company's EDGAR page.

How this comparison is built

The comparison starts with services that are online and payment-ready, have a known price, a description of at least 80 characters and measured 30-day uptime of at least 90%. Task selection then reads the documented endpoints. A service enters the table only with a priced route returning filings, insider transactions, holdings or XBRL facts. Analysis derived from filings is shown as an adjacent output. Company identity lookups, generic multi-source search, market snapshots and statement routes that do not declare an SEC source stay out, even when the service description mentions SEC data. Pages below the index threshold can still be read directly.

Provider claims were reviewed against the public service and endpoint descriptions captured on October 22, 2026, and remain provider claims. Monitoring supplies operating figures and reference prices; it does not test parsing accuracy or the lag after filing. Buyer counts describe observed paying wallets for the service, with the coverage limits explained on its linked page.

The visible comparison date is October 26, 2026. Endpoint membership, row prices, the type table and the job candidates share one classification, so a cheaper analysis route cannot replace the quote of a filing output.

Questions

Is there a free SEC API?

The 16 listed services have positive per-call prices for their task endpoints. The SEC itself publishes EDGAR data without charge; a paid route adds parsing, ticker resolution, hosting or normalization. Check the exact route and the provider's terms.

What do 100,000 SEC data calls cost?

At the median selected quote, 100,000 calls total $1,000.00 at $0.01 per call. This reference calculation assumes one request shape and excludes polling that returns nothing new and follow-up document reads.

What is the difference between Form 4 and Form 144?

Form 4 reports a completed change in an insider's holdings. Form 144 is a notice of a proposed sale of restricted or control securities. Treat a Form 144 as an intention, not a trade.

How current is 13F holdings data?

A 13F report describes positions at the end of a calendar quarter and can be filed up to 45 days later. Read it as a past snapshot, with its period of report, rather than as current positioning.

Are normalized fundamentals the same as the filed numbers?

Normalization maps company-specific XBRL tags to common concepts so companies compare. Keep the as-filed fact and its filing when a figure drives a decision, since a mapping can merge or split items.

How quickly does a new filing appear?

It depends on the provider's update cycle: a live read, a scheduled rebuild or a nightly parse. Measure the delay against EDGAR acceptance times for a few known filings before relying on a route for alerts.

Can I search the text of filings?

Full-text search routes find documents that mention a phrase, filtered by form, company or date. A search hit identifies a document to read; it does not extract or interpret the passage for you.

Does HTTP 402 establish a correct paid answer?

It establishes a payment requirement for the request. A stored challenge, an observed payment and an accurately parsed filing are different evidence; inspect the resource and request schema before paying.

How to pay

Each service answers an unpaid call with HTTP 402 and its price; your agent signs a USDC payment on the listed network and retries. No API key, no account, no subscription. See what x402 is.
