VAT and tax APIs you can pay per call

As of October 26, 2026, x402-list compares 16 VAT and tax APIs with documented tax endpoints. The median selected quote is $0.005. A VAT number check, a VAT rate lookup and a tax calculation are different products: compare what each route returns, the source it states and what it does when a registry is unavailable.

What a VAT and tax API does, and who calls it

A VAT and tax API answers one of three questions. Is this VAT number registered? Which rate applies? How much tax is due on this amount? Each question has its own contract. A registration check asks a registry such as the EU's VIES system, directly or through a cache the provider keeps, and returns valid or invalid, with the registered name and address where the route documents them. A rate lookup returns the rate in force for a country, ideally with its legal source and the date it took effect. A calculation takes an amount, a place or a transaction and returns the tax, the treatment or the rule that applies.

An agent calls a registration check before it issues an invoice without VAT to a business customer in another EU country, or before it pays a new supplier. It calls a rate lookup when it prices goods for a country, and a calculation when it needs the tax on a specific order or payroll amount. A wrong answer costs something different in each case: a number that turns out to be invalid can change how an invoice must be taxed, while an outdated rate misprices every order until someone notices.

The table covers 16 services with a matching priced tax endpoint as of October 26, 2026: 5 services check VAT numbers against a registry, 8 services return VAT or GST rates and 1 service calculates US sales tax. It leaves out 5 candidates that pass the listing checks but list no matching priced tax endpoint, or list a VAT check only inside a wider company check.

What the 16 VAT and tax services actually return

The classification follows each endpoint's documented output. A service with more than one product appears in more than one row, and each quote comes from the cheapest priced endpoint of that type, with its route attached.

Each price is the cheapest endpoint of that service for that kind of data: the same number wherever this page quotes it.

A registry check and a format check answer different questions. A format or checksum check catches a mistyped number without contacting a registry; it cannot say whether the number is registered today. A VAT status inside a company due-diligence or onboarding bundle is priced as the bundle, so it is listed as its own type and never sets a service's price in the main table. A route whose description repeats only its path is classified from the path and the service description together, under a type labeled as named by its path, and nothing beyond that name is attributed to it. Source labels report what a description states, such as VIES or a cited official source. They are provider statements, not audits by x402-list.

$/CALL is the price of the endpoint named under it: the cheapest vat number checked against vies or a national register, vat number format and checksum only, no registry, standard vat or gst rate of a country, vat on an amount or cross-border vat treatment, us sales and use tax for a location, other tax rates and tables such as income tax or fuel tax, income tax or payroll calculation for an amount, tax estimate (route named by its path) and sub-central tax rates (route named by its path) endpoint of the service or, for a service without one, its cheapest VAT and tax endpoint. Never the cheapest tool of a gateway. Other kinds of data have their own price in the tables below. VAT AND TAX ENDPOINTS counts the VAT and tax endpoints out of all the endpoints the service lists. BUYERS 30D counts distinct wallets that paid the whole service on-chain in 30 days, not only its VAT and tax endpoints. "Generalist" marks a gateway that sells more than three unrelated kinds of tools: it is never called the cheapest.

The buyer figure counts wallets that paid the whole service, so for a host that also sells sanctions screening or company data it does not show demand for VAT checks. Monitoring latency describes our unpaid checks; a paid registry check also waits for the registry, which can be slow or unavailable.

How to choose a VAT or tax API

Registration, format or rate

Decide which question you need answered. Before invoicing a business customer in another EU country, you need a registration check against VIES or the national register. To reject typos in a form, a format and checksum check is faster and needs no registry. To price an order, you need the rate, and for a US order the combined state and local sales tax for the delivery address. Do not compare these prices as if they bought the same answer.

When the registry is down

VIES relays each request to the national system of the member state that issued the number, and a national system can be unavailable for minutes or hours. Read what each provider does then: report the registry as unavailable without a validity claim, serve a cached answer, or fail the call. A cached valid result is not the same evidence as a live one, so store which kind of answer you received and when.

Evidence to keep

For an audit trail, keep the number checked, the date and time, the result and any consultation or request identifier. Check whether the response includes the registered name and address before building a name match on it, because member states do not all publish them through VIES. Treat an empty name as unknown, not as a mismatch.

Rates with a source and a date

A rate is only as good as its date. Prefer responses that return the effective date, the legal source and the date the value was last confirmed, and check how the service handles reduced rates, zero rates and jurisdictions without a VAT. When a rate route names the country in its path, check that a route exists for each country you need; a description that claims more countries than the endpoint list shows is a reason to confirm before you build on it.

Calculations are not advice

A sales tax calculation, a cross-border VAT treatment or an income tax calculation applies rules to the inputs you send. The providers describe what they compute; x402-list has not checked the results against a tax authority. Keep the inputs with the answer, and have a qualified person review the rules behind recurring filings.

Which endpoint fits which job

Start with the job, then compare the candidates whose classified endpoints match it. The price in a job list is tied to those types and can differ from the service's price in the main table.

Check a customer's VAT number before invoicing

Prefer a live registry check, and store the result with the date, the time and any consultation number. Decide in advance what your workflow does when the registry is unavailable: wait and retry, accept a cached answer, or stop and ask a person.

Catch a mistyped VAT number in a form

A format and checksum check needs no registry and answers at once, so it suits validation while a person types. It cannot say whether the number is registered; follow it with a registry check before you invoice.

Candidates today, most buyers first: Jithox E-Invoice Readiness ($0.01/call)

Look up a country's VAT or GST rate

Check the effective date, the cited source and whether reduced and zero rates are included. Cache the answer with its date, and refresh it before a rate change you know about takes effect.

Calculate VAT on an amount or a cross-border sale

Send the amount, the countries and the kind of supply exactly as the route expects, and keep the returned rule or rate with the invoice. A treatment decision for defined supply pairs does not cover every kind of sale.

Send the full delivery address and the kind of goods or work. Keep the combined rate, its components and any nexus alert with the order, and review answers that come back with a low confidence score.

Look up income, payroll or fuel taxes

Tax tables and calculations apply to one jurisdiction and one period: a tax year, a payroll month or a fuel tax quarter. Check that the jurisdiction and the period in the response match your filing.

Service details and limits to check

The notes below are read from each provider's description and endpoint list captured on October 22, 2026. They attribute advertised behavior; x402-list has not tested the correctness of the returned answers. Prices, uptime and buyers come from the current page model.

agosint

agosint lists GET /x402/vat for EU VAT numbers at $0.015. The description says the route checks the number against the official VIES service and returns valid or invalid with the registered name and address, can compare a name you expect, and returns a VIES consultation number to keep as audit evidence when you also send your own VAT number. Norwegian numbers are checked against the Norwegian VAT register instead. The same host sells a due-diligence call, at $0.1, that includes VAT validity among registry, sanctions and domain checks; that bundle is listed as a separate type and does not set the price in the table.

2 VAT and tax endpoints of 7 · $0.015/call (GET /x402/vat) · Base/POL/SOL · uptime 30d 100% · 143 ms · 0 buyers in 30 days

Strale

Strale lists GET /x402/vat-validate at $0.0216. Its description says the route validates a European VAT number against VIES and returns company name, address and validity, caches results for 24 hours and serves cached data when VIES is down. Caching makes repeated lookups fast, but a cached answer during an outage is older evidence than a live check: record which one you received if your process depends on the date of the check. The host also sells IBAN, LEI, sanctions and adverse-media checks, each priced on its own route.

1 VAT and tax endpoint of 10 · $0.0216/call (GET /x402/vat-validate) · Base · uptime 30d 100% · 199 ms · 17 buyers in 30 days

eu-validate

eu-validate lists one route, POST /v1/validate, at $0.01. The description says it validates an EU VAT number through VIES, an IBAN with an offline mod-97 checksum and a company domain through DNS and MX records, in any combination, in one call. The price is per call whether you send one field or three, so it suits an onboarding step that has all three values at hand. An IBAN checksum does not confirm who holds the account, and a domain that accepts mail does not confirm the company behind it.

1 VAT and tax endpoint of 1 · $0.01/call (POST /v1/validate) · Base · uptime 30d 100% · 841 ms · 1 buyer in 30 days

Jithox E-Invoice Readiness

Jithox E-Invoice Readiness lists a live check, verify_vat_vies, at $0.01, and a format and checksum check, validate_vat_number, at $0.01. The descriptions keep the two apart: the format check is plausibility only and not a VIES result, while the live check returns valid, invalid, invalid input or unavailable with its source and time, and makes no validity claim when VIES is down. The same host lists structural e-invoice validation and a Peppol receiver lookup. It states that it never sends invoices and gives no legal or tax advice.

4 VAT and tax endpoints of 5 · $0.01/call (POST /x402/mainnet/paycall/tools/verify_vat_vies) · Base · uptime 30d 100% · 288 ms · 0 buyers in 30 days

Proyecto Ayuda Data API

Proyecto Ayuda Data API lists GET /vat-check at $0.005. The endpoint description, written in Spanish, says it validates an EU VAT number through VIES and takes the country code and the number as separate parameters. It does not describe the response fields, so check whether a registered name and address come back before you rely on them. The host also sells crypto prices and OFAC screening, which are unrelated to VAT.

1 VAT and tax endpoint of 4 · $0.005/call (GET /vat-check) · Base · uptime 30d 98.3% · 431 ms · 0 buyers in 30 days

euroref — European government reference data

euroref lists GET /v1/fr/vat, the French standard VAT rate, at $0.003. The response is described as cited JSON with the source URL, the effective date and the date the value was last confirmed. The service description claims 35 countries, reduced and zero bands and point-in-time reads with an as-of date, while the endpoint list read for this page shows the France route: confirm the route for each country you need. The description also says out-of-scope questions are refused free of charge rather than guessed.

1 VAT and tax endpoint of 2 · $0.003/call (GET /v1/fr/vat) · Base · uptime 30d 99.6% · 790 ms · 0 buyers in 30 days

asiaref

asiaref lists GET /v1/hk/vat at $0.003, labeled as the Hong Kong value-added tax or GST, with source URL, effective date and last-confirmed date. The label alone does not establish whether the response reports a rate, zero or a not-applicable result; inspect the value and its cited source before using it. The description claims 28 Asian countries, with every value cited to the official gazette, central bank or revenue authority.

1 VAT and tax endpoint of 3 · $0.003/call (GET /v1/hk/vat) · Base · uptime 30d 99.6% · 479 ms · 14 buyers in 30 days

AfriRef - Pan-African government reference data

AfriRef lists standard VAT rate routes for South Africa and Nigeria from $0.003, and two calculations from $0.01: POST /v1/answers/vat grosses up or extracts VAT for an amount, including statutory levy components, and POST /v1/vat/determine returns the cross-border VAT treatment of a digital-services sale for the EU, the UK and South Africa, with the applied rule cited to the statute. The description limits that treatment to defined supply pairs. The same host lists Kenyan income tax brackets, income tax and payroll calculations, and a certified South African rate route with its own price.

9 VAT and tax endpoints of 18 · $0.003/call (GET /v1/ng/vat) · Base · uptime 30d 99.7% · 462 ms · 14 buyers in 30 days

zaref

zaref lists the South African VAT rate at $0.005, with the source URL, effective date and a freshness flag. The same host lists personal income tax tables, fuel levies with the carbon tax rate and other national tax rates, such as corporate tax and transfer duty, from $0.005. The description says every parameter is enumerated in its OpenAPI specification and that an unrecognized value is rejected with a free error instead of a silent default, which makes a malformed request visible rather than answered with the wrong series.

4 VAT and tax endpoints of 36 · $0.005/call (GET /v1/vat) · Base · uptime 30d 99.6% · 255 ms · 14 buyers in 30 days

AgentTax

AgentTax lists GET /api/v1/calculate for US sales and use tax at $0.005. The description says it returns the combined state and local rate, taxability by type of work, economic-nexus alerts and a confidence score for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and the endpoint names 6,636 local ZIP-level rates. A confidence score on a tax rate is a signal to review: store it with the order and set a threshold below which a person checks the result before the invoice goes out.

1 VAT and tax endpoint of 1 · $0.005/call (GET /api/v1/calculate) · Base · uptime 30d 100% · 938 ms · 0 buyers in 30 days

FuelTax IFTA Rates API

FuelTax IFTA Rates API lists GET /v1/rates at $0.005 for IFTA fuel tax rates by quarter, fuel type and jurisdiction, and a route that reports what changed since the previous quarter. The description says the rates are human-reviewed against iftach.org every quarter and that mid-quarter revisions read as separate periods. IFTA is the fuel tax agreement for interstate trucking in the United States and Canada, not a VAT; it is in the table because this page covers tax rates as well. The quarter is part of the change route's path, so check which quarters it serves.

2 VAT and tax endpoints of 4 · $0.005/call (GET /v1/rates) · Base · uptime 30d 99.4% · 348 ms · 5 buyers in 30 days

What the calls cost at different volumes

The median selected endpoint costs $0.005 per call. At that same request shape, 100,000 calls would cost $500.00. This is a comparison aid, not an invoice: a registry check that times out and is retried is a second call, and checking a list of numbers costs one call per number unless the route documents a batch.

Each service at the price of its main VAT and tax endpoint, the one named in the table above.

Rate lookups are cheap to run at volume when you cache them: a VAT rate changes rarely, while a registration status can change at any time. Keep the effective date with each cached rate, refresh it on a schedule you can defend, and do not cache a registration check longer than your process allows.

Inspect a request and its payment evidence

For a single EU VAT number, agosint documents GET /x402/vat, with a registration-check quote of $0.015. The description says the response states valid or invalid with the registered name and address, can compare a name you expect and, when you also send your own VAT number, returns a VIES consultation number.

The listed method and description establish the advertised contract. This explanation does not reproduce an HTTP 402 challenge or certify a paid response. Open the service page's payment evidence and request the challenge for the exact query before authorizing payment. Compare resource, method, network, asset and amount together, and do not reuse a challenge obtained for a different route on the same host.

What this comparison measures

The listing requires an online, payment-ready service, a usable description, an advertised price and at least 90% measured uptime over 30 days. Task selection then reads the endpoint list and keeps documented VAT and tax routes. A VAT check that exists only inside a company due-diligence, KYB, lead or onboarding bundle is shown as a separate type and does not qualify a service alone. A VAT product named only in a service description is not priced without a matching route, and an exchange rate, a tax calendar, a footnote table or a snapshot of every series is not a tax rate.

Uptime and average latency come from monitoring checks. Buyer counts are distinct paying wallets observed for the whole service in the window. A successful unpaid HTTP 402 response shows a payment requirement, not a correct registry or rate answer after payment. Test with numbers whose status you know, including an invalid one and one from a member state that does not publish names, before putting a recurring workflow on any endpoint.

Questions

Is there a free VAT API in this comparison?

The 16 listed services have positive per-call prices for their task endpoints. A free tier, a free evaluation country or an out-of-scope question refused without charge is a provider statement and does not make the paid route free. Check the terms for the exact request.

How much do 100,000 VAT and tax calls cost?

Using the median selected endpoint, 100,000 calls total $500.00 at $0.005 per call. That assumes one call per number or lookup; retries after a registry timeout and cached reads change the total.

Is a VAT format check the same as a VIES check?

No. A format or checksum check tells you the number could be valid. A VIES or national register check reports the registration status the registry returned. A provider that caches results can answer from an earlier check, so keep the time of the check with the result. The page lists them as separate data types.

What happens if VIES is unavailable?

It depends on the provider. Read each description: a route can report the registry as unavailable without a validity claim, serve a cached answer or fail. Store which kind of answer you received, with its date.

Do VAT checks return the registered company name and address?

Only where the endpoint documents it and the member state publishes it. Check the response fields before relying on a name match, and handle an empty name as unknown rather than a mismatch.

Can I get the VAT rate of any country?

Check the route and the description. Confirm that each country you need has a route, that reduced and zero rates are included where you need them, and what the route returns for a jurisdiction without a VAT.

Does the comparison include US sales tax?

As of October 26, 2026, 1 listed service documents US sales and use tax. The answer depends on the exact address, the taxability of the product and nexus, so send complete inputs and keep the rate breakdown with the order.

Is a tax calculation from these APIs tax advice?

No. A calculation applies the provider's rules to your inputs. Providers state their sources and limits; x402-list has not verified the results. Keep the inputs and outputs, and have a qualified person review the rules behind your filings.

Does an HTTP 402 check prove a correct VAT answer?

It shows that the endpoint asks for payment. It does not show that a settled request returns a correct registry or rate answer. The listing reports monitoring and payment observations separately from provider claims.

Does latency show how long a VAT check takes?

No. The latency column comes from unpaid monitoring checks. A paid registry check also waits for VIES or the national register, which can be slower or unavailable at times.

How to pay

Each service answers an unpaid call with HTTP 402 and its price; your agent signs a USDC payment on the listed network and retries. No API key, no account, no subscription. See what x402 is.
